Cosmetic Lasers: An Overview

The word 'laser' conjures up very strong emotions generally in most of my patients: somewhere between pure elation to dangerous aversion. This comes from deficiencies in understanding of the very perception of laser, not to mention when you consider many have strong fallacies about lasers.

Quite just some think they are an even more cure-all, while others tell stories of someone who was sidelined for the purpose of weeks to nurse scarring following a laser blast.

What is needed to LASER?

The truth the first is, Lasers are not phase that magical. They in order to, simply, machines which put out light.

The difference is unlike conventional light directories, lasers emit intensely sunshine of a fixed wavelength, that'll be in phase. (Think on the scenario where 3 children are on swings in there playground. If all of them are moving in tandem, they are available in phase. If they way soy candles move bears no relation along, they are out men or women phase).

By using various materials, the wavelength in our light emitted can become more controlled. You have analyze terms like Ruby Laser beam, Nd: Yag Laser, and many others. These refer to the laser medium that is housed in the laserlight machine. They are and those which determine the wavelength these emitted light.

Now what makes the wavelength important?

Different lasers target certain skin component

Our skin has different components and anyone components absorb light in different ways with different wavelengths. Utilizing different lasers and the suitable settings, different structures in the market skin can be aimed and selectively destroyed. One can target the melanin (pigmented component), the fee haemoglobin (in blood vessels), hair follicles, or the water in the skin with different lasers.

With this simple yet important principle, lasers happen to be an important tool at the back of Cosmetic Dermatology. Pigment Lasers target colouring in the skin to collapse the melanin and improve pigmentation. Similarly, vein removal lasers pinpoint the hemoglobin in the flow of blood, to cause the veins to coagulate and be removed from the skin. Rejuvenation lasers target water and collagen in the mid layer of the skin - the dermis - to obtain new collagen formation.

It is important to remember, however, that lasers can't be a cure all. Many a time, alternative treatment methods very well may be superior to lasers. You should consult your doctor for more info.

Common Cosmetic uses to receive lasers today include:

Treatment of small blood vessels on the floor, such as spider veins

Treatment of birthmarks access to abnormal blood vessel developing (e. g. port wines stains)

Treatment of pigmentation

Treatment made by acne

Removal of tattoos

Hair reduction

Skin ablation for wrinkles, scars, and rejuvenation

Post treatment downtime

The downtime for each laser is also different. This can vary from none (just mild inflammation of the joints of skin) with non-ablative lasers, to 4 weeks by way of ablative laser resurfacing. Scabbing and pinpoint bleeding of the skin sometimes occur with some laser treatments, and these usually resolve soon after (less than an electric week). Newer fractional lasers, commonly used for treating acne scarring, are in between - the downtime usually ranges from 1 to 2 weeks.
